PRINCETON, N.J. — Seven different Ivies have raised the Vince Lombardi Trophy since 2008, combining for 11 Super Bowl championships. An eighth—and ninth—could join Matt Birk, Kevin Booth, Jim Finn, Zak DeOssie, James Develin, Bryan Walters and John Lovett in the illustrious group following this year’s Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 7.

The Ivy League is represented in the game for the ninth-straight year—by tight end Cameron Brate out of Harvard and wide receiver Justin Watson out of Penn on the NFC champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Brate and Watson’s Buccaneers eliminated Lovett’s Green Bay Packers, 31-26, in the NFC Championship Game. Lovett did not appear in the losing effort, as he has been on the injured reserve since Nov. 14 with a torn ACL.

Brate has proven a sure-handed target in the first playoff appearance of his seven-year NFL career, catching 11 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown over the past three games. He posted three catches for 19 yards—and his first touchdown since Week 10—in the NFC Championship Game. Brate’s third-quarter touchdown proved to be the game-winner for the Buccaneers.

Watson saw his career first playoff action in the NFC Championship Game, making a tackle on a fourth-quarter kickoff return for the Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers will take on the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 7.

A pair of Harvard alumni San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk and Seattle Seahawks long snapper Tyler Ott were named to the 2021 Pro Bowl.  The selection is the fifth for Juszczyk and the first for Ott. There will be no Pro Bowl game this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the players will be celebrated with a virtual Pro Bowl experience within the Madden NFL 21 video game on Sunday, Jan. 31.

25 Ivies earned NFL roster spots during the 2020 season, with 22 appearing in a regular-season game and 12 advancing to the NFL Playoffs.
